What Does Laser Hair Removal Involve?
Laser hair removal is a procedure that destroys hair follicles and, thus, permanently prevents hair from growing back. The melanin or pigment in the follicle attracts and absorbs the heat from the laser, and that heat destroys the follicle. The laser targets only the hair and its follicle; it leaves the surrounding skin unharmed.
Laser hair removal in San Diego can be performed on many parts of the body, including the face, arms, bikini area, underarms, and legs. The laser affects only hair that is actively growing; it won’t work on hair that is dormant or about to be shed. Therefore, since the hair doesn’t all grow at the same time, the client will usually need a series of treatments to get the desired results.
Before the procedure, the practitioner will adjust the laser to suit the location, thickness and color of the hair and the color of the client’s skin. Laser hair removal does make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so the client will have to stay out of the sun or apply sunscreen for a set amount of time during their treatment regimen.
How Should Someone Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?
A client planning to undergo laser hair removal should not undergo waxing or electrolysis for a set amount of time before the procedure. Similarly, they should not pluck any hairs before the procedure.
Electrolysis, plucking and waxing all temporarily remove the hair follicles and will, therefore, reduce the effectiveness of the laser treatment. It’s okay to shave, however, as this does not affect the hair follicle.
